Dark Fe oxides and sulfides are major discoloring impurities in mined commercial white kaolin clay. In order to evaluate the potential influence of Fe-cycle bacteria on Fe cycling during post-depositional clay-weathering alteration, Fe(III)-reducing and/or Fe(II)-oxidizing microorganisms were examined in open-pit, subsurface mine samples from kaolin lenses and smectite formations collected from sites in central Georgia. Samples of varying age were examined, including late Eocene smectite overburden, hard kaolin of Middle Eocene age, soft gray kaolin from the late Paleocene, and soft tan kaolin of late Cretaceous age. These clays contained 0.06–5.33% organic carbon, which included various potential organic electron donors for bacterial metabolism: formate (1.1–30.6 mmol/kg), acetate (0–40.5 mmol/kg), lactate (0–12.1 mmol/kg), pyruvate (0.4–78 mmol/kg), oxalate (0–141.7 mmol/kg), and citrate (0–1.4 mmol/kg). All clay samples studied had small concentrations of ‘bio-available’ Fe(III) (0.5 M HCl-extractable Fe, 0.5–2.8 mmol/kg) compared to total Fe (HF-extractable, 25–171.9 mmol/kg). The highest Fe(III)/[Fe(II)+Fe(III)] ratio and the lowest organic carbon content were in kaolin samples in which Fe(III) reduction was determined to be the dominant terminal electron accepting process by hydrogen analysis. All clay samples showed greater numbers of Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria (22–22,000 cells/g) than Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (3–410 cells/g) as determined by MPN analysis. The Fe(III)-reducing activity in clays could be stimulated with the addition of 1 mM of the Fe(III) chelator, nitrilotriacetic acid. The addition of nitrate stimulated anaerobic Fe(II) oxidation. These results suggest that anaerobic bacteria involved in both oxidation and reduction of Fe exist in these subsurface clay formations, and might have had an influence on post-depositional weathering reactions.

Summary
Localities in the interior of South Africa, such as Taung and Vaal River sites, were intensively researched after hominins were discovered (Péringuey, 1911; Dart, 1925a; Goodwin, 1928), but then neglected for the fossil-rich, dolomitic breccia sites in Gauteng Province (e.g., Cooke, 1963, 1967; Vrba, 1976; Brain, 1981, Brain and Sillen, 1988; Bamford, 1999; Pickering and Kramers, 2010; Herries and Shaw, 2011; Reynolds et al., 2011; Lee-Thorp and Sponheimer, 2013). Recently, knowledge of the interior region has increased, following excavations at Florisbad (Brink, 1988; Kuman et al., 1999; Toffolo et al., 2015), Taung, including Equus Cave (Scott, 1987; Klein et al., 1991; McKee and Tobias, 1994; Lee-Thorp and Beaumont, 1995; Johnson et al., 1997; Hopley et al., 2013; McKee, 2016), Canteen Kopje (Beaumont, 1990, 2004; McNabb and Beaumont, 2011; Smith et al., 2012; Lotter et al., 2016), Pniel (Beaumont, 1990; Kunneriath and Gaillard, 2010; Hutson, 2018), Erfkroon (Churchill et al., 2000a; Brink et al., 2015a), Bundu Farm (Kiberd, 2006; Hutson, 2018), Cornelia (Brink et al., 2012; Toffolo et al., 2019) and the Kathu Complex (Porat et al., 2010; Wilkins and Chazan, 2012; Wilkins et al., 2012; Walker et al., 2014; Lukich et al., 2019, 2020).
Individualized Text Messages about Public Services Fail to Sway Voters: Evidence from a Field Experiment on Ugandan Elections

Mobile communication technologies can provide citizens access to information that is tailored to their specific circumstances. Such technologies may therefore increase citizens’ ability to vote in line with their interests and hold politicians accountable. In a large-scale randomized controlled trial in Uganda (n = 16,083), we investigated whether citizens who receive private, timely, and individualized text messages by mobile phone about public services in their community punished or rewarded incumbents in local elections in line with the information. Respondents claimed to find the messages valuable and there is evidence that they briefly updated their beliefs based on the messages; however, the treatment did not cause increased votes for incumbents where public services were better than expected nor decreased votes where public services were worse than anticipated. The considerable knowledge gaps among citizens identified in this study indicate potential for communication technologies to effectively share civic information. Yet the findings imply that when the attribution of public service outcomes is difficult, even individualized information is unlikely to affect voting behavior.
Lift-up, Kelvin–Helmholtz and Orr mechanisms in turbulent jets

Three amplification mechanisms present in turbulent jets, namely lift-up, Kelvin–Helmholtz and Orr, are characterized via global resolvent analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) over a range of Mach numbers. The lift-up mechanism was recently identified in turbulent jets via local analysis by Nogueira et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 873, 2019, pp. 211–237) at low Strouhal number ($St$) and non-zero azimuthal wavenumbers ($m$). In these limits, a global SPOD analysis of data from high-fidelity simulations reveals streamwise vortices and streaks similar to those found in turbulent wall-bounded flows. These structures are in qualitative agreement with the global resolvent analysis, which shows that they are a response to upstream forcing of streamwise vorticity near the nozzle exit. Analysis of mode shapes, component-wise amplitudes and sensitivity analysis distinguishes the three mechanisms and the regions of frequency–wavenumber space where each dominates, finding lift-up to be dominant as $St/m\rightarrow 0$. Finally, SPOD and resolvent analyses of localized regions show that the lift-up mechanism is present throughout the jet, with a dominant azimuthal wavenumber inversely proportional to streamwise distance from the nozzle, with streaks of azimuthal wavenumber exceeding five near the nozzle, and wavenumbers one and two most energetic far downstream of the potential core.

Background:
One aim of the European prediction of psychosis study (EPOS) has been to evaluate the clinical course of putatively prodromal patients in terms of psychopathology.
Methods:245 patients at risk for psychosis defined by attenuated positive symptoms, brief limited psychotic symptoms, a state/ trait combination or cognitive-perceptive basic symptoms was recruited in six centres in four countries. The Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS) and the Bonn Scale for the Assessment of Basic Symptoms – Prediction List (BSABS-P) were employed. Follow-up was scheduled after 9 months (t1) and 18 months.
Results:In total, 40 patients developed a psychosis (P). Compared to those without a transition (NP), P showed significantly higher SIPS scores at baseline. The same applied to the BSABS-P sub-scores 'cognitive perception disturbances' and 'cognitive motor disturbances'. The P sub-group developing psychosis after t1 showed no significant change of the SIPS positive (SIPS-P) sub-score or of any BSABS-P score from baseline to t1, whereas all scores improved in the NP group. At t1, SIPS-P and BSABS-P sub-score 'cognitive thought disturbances' were significantly lower in those later becoming psychotic.
Conclusion:Patients at risk showing a transition to psychosis during exhibited a pronounced psychopathology at baseline. Also, the positive symptom scores did not significantly improve during 1st follow-up, whereas those patients with no transition during the complete follow-up showed an improvement of all scores. As EPOS is a naturalistic study, different treatments have been performed in a considerable portion of the patients and association with course awaits further analysis.

Introduction
Activated microglia express translocator protein (TSPO) on the outer mitochondrial membrane. PET ligands targeting TSPO allow in vivo non-invasive visualization and quantification of neuroinflammation. Whereas inflammation in schizophrenia was previously studied using 11C-PK11195, 18F-PBR111 is a novel second-generation tracer, with high specific TSPO binding and longer half-life.
ObjectiveTo establish a protocol for 18F-PBR111 TSPO PET in schizophrenia.
MethodsA pilot study on a Siemens Biograph mCT PET-scanner in healthy controls and schizophrenia patients (n=9).
ResultsSubjects underwent a 90-minute dynamic brain PET-CT, following i.v. bolus injection of 214±13 MBq 18F-PBR111. An arterial input function was measured using continuous blood sampling (Twilite, Switzerland) with discrete samples for metabolite analysis. The metabolite corrected plasma input function (IPF) was calculated from the whole blood input function, individual plasma to whole blood and parent fraction data as determined by a SEP-PAK procedure. Dynamic PET data were reconstructed and a post-reconstruction motion correction was applied. Regional tissue time activity curves (TACs) were extracted from the PET images for regions of interest determined from individual MRI images. Total volume of distribution (VT) was then calculated from fitting a reversible two-tissue compartmental model to the measured TACs using the individual IPF. Prior genotyping for TSPO receptor polymorphism (rs6971) allowed to exclude low-affinity binders (estimated 10% of European population). The procedure was well tolerated.
ConclusionsWe established a protocol for 18F-PBR111 TSPO PET in healthy subjects and schizophrenia patients, thereby providing useful information for others considering 18F-PBR111 TSPO PET imaging for evaluation of neuroinflammation.

Background:
Activation of microglial cells is currently explored in schizophrenia pathophysiology. Post-mortem immunohistochemistry remains the most accurate method to investigate microglial morphology and function, since high microglial plasticity limits extrapolation of in vitro and animal research results to the human brain.
Method:To investigate microglial morphology and activation patterns, we performed immunohistochemistry with specific microglial markers: Iba1 (marker of resting and activated microglia), CD68 (marker of microglial lysosomes, indicative of phagocytic microglia) and CD64 (FcγRI, binds IgG) on formalin fixed paraffin embedded brain tissue from the Corsellis Collection (BRAIN UK), in 15 schizophrenia cases and 15 nonneurological controls. Immunostaining was quantified by image capture and analysis (Image J, NIH, US) to provide a measure of protein load. We also reviewed existing literature on microglial immunostaining in schizophrenia using Pubmed.
Results:Few studies have examined post-mortem microglia in schizophrenia, mostly with HLA-DP/DQ/DR markers. Although frequently studied in neurological disorders Iba1, but also CD64 were never previously investigated in schizophrenia patients. Two studies explored CD68, but results were misinterpreted for resting state tissue macrophages. Our pilot study shows Iba1, CD68 and CD64 can detect microglial cells in schizophrenia brain tissue, but considerable heterogeneity exists both in patients and controls, probably due to confounding by clinical variables, e.g. age and cause of death.
Conclusion:Future research needs careful selection of cases and controls to minimize heterogeneity due to confounding clinical variables. Highly specific microglial markers such as Iba1, CD64 and CD68 are very useful and ought to be introduced into schizophrenia research.
Psychiatric Training in Perinatal Mental Health Across European Countries

Introduction
The aim of postgraduate psychiatric training is to prepare psychiatrists to practice independently. The quality of care provided will depend on the training they received. Pregnancy and childbirth (usually called the perinatal period) are a high-risk period for many women with psychiatric problems. An illness episode at that time can have a devastating effect on women and the whole family, including the child's development.
ObjectivesTo understand how perinatal mental health training is organized within Europe and how it fits in the training curricula.
MethodsThe European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees conducts an annual survey of all member country organizations. We have asked respondents if they received training in perinatal psychiatry, whether that was optional or mandatory and what was its duration. Where training in perinatal psychiatry was not available we asked if they felt it should be.
ResultsData will be presented from the 35 countries that responded in the 2016 survey. Six countries reported that training in perinatal mental health is available. But it is mandatory in only one, with the others offering a mix of theoretical and practical optional training. Of the 29 countries that do not offer perinatal psychiatry training, the majority reported it should be offered and mandatory.
ConclusionThere is a gap in the expectations of psychiatrists treating women in pregnancy and after birth, and a widespread lack of training for them to be able to do so effectively.

Background:
There is a shortage of psychiatrists worldwide. Within Europe, psychiatric trainees can move between countries, which increases the problem in some countries and alleviates it in others. However, little is known about the reasons psychiatric trainees move to another country.
Methods:Survey of psychiatric trainees in 33 European countries, exploring how frequently psychiatric trainees have migrated or want to migrate, their reasons to stay and leave the country, and the countries where they come from and where they move to. A 61-item self-report questionnaire was developed, covering questions about their demographics, experiences of short-term mobility (from 3 months up to 1 year), experiences of long-term migration (of more than 1 year) and their attitudes towards migration.
Results:A total of 2281 psychiatric trainees in Europe participated in the survey, of which 72.0% have ‘ever’ considered to move to a different country in their future, 53.5% were considering it ‘now’, at the time of the survey, and 13.3% had already moved country. For these immigrant trainees, academic was the main reason they gave to move from their country of origin. For all trainees, the overall main reason for which they would leave was financial (34.4%), especially in those with lower (<500€) incomes (58.1%), whereas in those with higher (>2500€) incomes, personal reasons were paramount (44.5%).
Conclusions:A high number of psychiatric trainees considered moving to another country, and their motivation largely reflects the substantial salary differences. These findings suggest tackling financial conditions and academic opportunities.

Established in 2008, the Research Working Group of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT) creates a platform for trainee-led collaborative studies. Several large-scale transnational studies on training-related subjects have been initiated and carried out, driven by psychiatry trainees. Examples of recent and ongoing projects are the Brain Drain study, which investigated migratory experiences and attitudes among trainees in Europe, and the TEO-PC project, which aims to raise awareness on UEMS Psychiatric competencies as well as to compile data on trainees’ experiences and satisfaction with their national training programs.
Earlier projects leading to publications have looked into drug prescription habits of trainees [1,2] and the interactions trainees with pharmaceutical industry [3]. Besides these projects, EFPT yearly gathers reports from the representatives of the national trainees associations on the structure, content and conditions of psychiatry training in all member countries. The information obtained through these channels is used actively to guide and influence policy related to psychiatry training, through collaboration with relevant organizations involved in the creation of guidelines, and through the EFPT statements, which serve to empower trainees themselves.

Global institutions are afflicted by severe democratic deficits, while many of the major problems facing the world remain intractable. Against this backdrop, we develop a deliberative approach that puts effective, inclusive, and transformative communication at the heart of global governance. Multilateral negotiations, international organizations and regimes, governance networks, and scientific assessments can be rendered more deliberative and democratic. More thoroughgoing transformations could involve citizens' assemblies, nested forums, transnational mini-publics, crowdsourcing, and a global dissent channel. The deliberative role of global civil society is vital. We show how different institutional and civil society elements can be linked to good effect in a global deliberative system. The capacity of deliberative institutions to revise their own structures and processes means that deliberative global governance is not just a framework but also a reconstructive learning process. A deliberative approach can advance democratic legitimacy and yield progress on global problems such as climate change, violent conflict and poverty.

Measuring and mitigating methane (CH4) emissions from livestock is of increasing importance for the environment and for policy making. Potentially, the most sustainable way of reducing enteric CH4 emission from ruminants is through the estimation of genomic breeding values to facilitate genetic selection. There is potential for adopting genetic selection and in the future genomic selection, for reduced CH4 emissions from ruminants. From this review it has been observed that both CH4 emissions and production (g/day) are a heritable and repeatable trait. CH4 emissions are strongly related to feed intake both in the short term (minutes to several hours) and over the medium term (days). When measured over the medium term, CH4 yield (MY, g CH4/kg dry matter intake) is a heritable and repeatable trait albeit with less genetic variation than for CH4 emissions. CH4 emissions of individual animals are moderately repeatable across diets, and across feeding levels, when measured in respiration chambers. Repeatability is lower when short term measurements are used, possibly due to variation in time and amount of feed ingested prior to the measurement. However, while repeated measurements add value; it is preferable the measures be separated by at least 3 to 14 days. This temporal separation of measurements needs to be investigated further. Given the above issue can be resolved, short term (over minutes to hours) measurements of CH4 emissions show promise, especially on systems where animals are fed ad libitum and frequency of meals is high. However, we believe that for short-term measurements to be useful for genetic evaluation, a number (between 3 and 20) of measurements will be required over an extended period of time (weeks to months). There are opportunities for using short-term measurements in standardised feeding situations such as breath ‘sniffers’ attached to milking parlours or total mixed ration feeding bins, to measure CH4. Genomic selection has the potential to reduce both CH4 emissions and MY, but measurements on thousands of individuals will be required. This includes the need for combined resources across countries in an international effort, emphasising the need to acknowledge the impact of animal and production systems on measurement of the CH4 trait during design of experiments.

The objective of this study was to determine the genetic parameters of methane (CH4) emissions and their genetic correlations with key production traits. The trial measured the CH4 emissions, at 5-min intervals, from 1225 sheep placed in respiration chambers for 2 days, with repeat measurements 2 weeks later for another 2 days. They were fed in the chambers, based on live weight, a pelleted lucerne ration at 2.0 times estimated maintenance requirements. Methane outputs were calculated for g CH4/day and g CH4/kg dry matter intake (DMI) for each of the 4 days. Single trait models were used to obtain estimates of heritability and repeatability. Heritability of g CH4/day was 0.29 ± 0.05, and for g CH4/kg DMI 0.13 ± 0.03. Repeatability between measurements 14 days apart were 0.55 ± 0.02 and 0.26 ± 0.02, for the two traits. The genetic and phenotypic correlations of CH4 outputs with various production traits (weaning weight, live weight at 8 months of age, dag score, muscle depth and fleece weight at 12 months of age) measured in the first year of life, were estimated using bivariate models. With the exception of fleece weight, correlations were weak and not significantly different from zero for the g CH4/kg DMI trait. For fleece weight the phenotypic and genetic correlation estimates were −0.08 ± 0.03 and −0.32 ± 0.11 suggesting a low economically favourable relationship. These results indicate that there is genetic variation between animals for CH4 emission traits even after adjustment for feed intake and that these traits are repeatable. Current work includes the establishment of selection lines from these animals to investigate the physiological, microbial and anatomical changes, coupled with investigations into shorter and alternative CH4 emission measurement and breeding value estimation techniques; including genomic selection.

Interrelated neuropsychological and anatomical evidence of hippocampal pathology in the at-risk mental state

Background
Verbal learning and memory deficits are frequent among patients with schizophrenia and correlate with reduced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volumes of the hippocampus in these patients. A crucial question is the extent to which interrelated structural-functional deficits of the hippocampus reflect a vulnerability to schizophrenia, as opposed to the disorder per se.
MethodWe combined brain structural measures and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) to assess hippocampal structure and function in 36 never-medicated individuals suspected to be in early (EPS) or late prodromal states (LPS) of schizophrenia relative to 30 healthy controls.
ResultsGroup comparisons revealed bilaterally reduced MRI hippocampal volumes in both EPS and LPS subjects. In LPS subjects but not in EPS subjects, these reductions were correlated with poorer performance in RAVLT delayed recall.
ConclusionsOur findings suggest progressive and interrelated structural-functional pathology of the hippocampus, as prodromal symptoms and behaviours accumulate, and the level of risk for psychosis increases. Given the inverse correlation of learning and memory deficits with social and vocational functioning in established schizophrenia, our findings substantiate the rationale for developing preventive treatment strategies that maintain cognitive capacities in the at-risk mental state.
Antiplatelet therapy preceding coronary artery surgery: implications for bleeding, transfusion requirements and outcome

Background and objective
Bleeding after cardiac surgery correlates with morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of antiplatelet therapy on bleeding and transfusion rates in coronary artery bypass grafting.
MethodsForty patients receiving aspirin and/or clopidogrel/ticlopidine within 7 days prior to surgery were retrospectively compared to 40 control patients lacking antiplatelet therapy for at least 8 preoperative days. Blood loss was assessed as chest-tube drainage during the first 12 h after surgery. Units transfused were recorded intraoperatively and during stay in the intensive care unit.
ResultsBoth groups were comparable for pre- and intraoperative data. Irrespective of single or combined antiplatelet therapy, treated patients demonstrated lower fractions of the creatine-kinase isoenzyme MB (5.8 ± 3.1 vs. 8.2 ± 4.1%; P = 0.004) and infarction rates (0 vs. 3; P = 0.240) than control patients, but had significantly more haemorrhages (940 ± 861 mL vs. 412 ± 590 mL; P = 0.002) and transfusion requirements (red cells: 4.5 ± 4.9 vs. 1.5 ± 2.3, plasma: 4.9 ± 6.4 vs. 1.3 ± 2.5, platelets: 1.5 ± 1.3 vs. 0.1 ± 0.2; all P ⩽ 0.001). The differences to control patients were more pronounced for only short antiplatelet therapy free intervals or ongoing antiplatelet therapy (P⩽2 days ⩽ 0.019). For antiplatelet therapy free intervals longer than 2 days, bleeding and transfusion rates (except for platelets) were nonsignificantly higher as compared to control patients (P ⩾ 0.058).
ConclusionsTo overcome increased blood loss and transfusion rates, antiplatelet therapy should be discontinued for at least 2 days before elective coronary surgery. Whether patients at high risk for myocardial infarction might benefit from ongoing antiplatelet therapy remains to be investigated.
Cannabis use disorders in the USA: prevalence, correlates and co-morbidity

Background. The purpose of this study was to present 12-month and lifetime estimates of the prevalence, sociodemographic and clinical correlates, and psychiatric co-morbidity of DSM-IV cannabis abuse and dependence.
Method. Data were derived from a large nationally representative survey (n=43093) of US adults.
Results. The prevalence of 12-month and lifetime DSM-IV cannabis abuse (1·1% and 7·2%) exceeded the corresponding rates of cannabis dependence (0·3% and 1·3%). Being male, Native American, widowed/separated/divorced, and residing in the West increased the odds whereas being Black, Asian or Hispanic decreased the odds of cannabis abuse and dependence. Cannabis dependence was significantly associated with low income. Ages of onset for both cannabis use disorders occurred in adolescence and the majority of individuals with these disorders remained untreated. Co-morbidity was high between cannabis use disorders and other Axis I and II disorders.
Conclusions. Cannabis use disorders continue to present a widespread and serious personal and public health problem. Native Americans were found to have high rates of cannabis use disorders, warranting closer attention to the mental health needs of this subgroup. Associations between cannabis abuse and dependence and Axis I and II disorders were strong, signaling the need for more comprehensive assessment of individuals with cannabis use disorders. Further controlled treatment studies are needed, especially among co-morbid individuals, in view of growing evidence of the adverse personal, medical and societal impacts of cannabis use disorders in the USA.

Phil C. Weigand has devoted his career to the anthropology and archaeology of the most poorly known area of Mesoamerica, “an enormous area of elaborate cultural development [that] has been relegated to unimportance” (Weigand and Foster 1985:5). We refer, of course, to the Occidente or West Mexico, roughly defined by the states of Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, and Nayarit, often including parts of Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Sinaloa, and sometimes Guerrero. Over the course of his career, Weigand has integrated data from archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnography to gain a better understanding of western Mesoamerica. This Special Section is an homenaje to Phil that draws together contributions by some of his friends and colleagues who have felt his influence over the years.

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale was “the” place to be for anyone interested in North or West Mexican studies. J. Charles Kelley, Carroll “Cal” Riley, Campbell Pennington, and Basil Hedrick constituted the cadre of scholars who specialized in the region but also served as mentors and models for what anthropological archaeology could be, even in the pre-Binfordian days. Walter Taylor also was there as an icon of theoretical archaeology. All of these scholars not only believed but also demonstrated that the subdisciplines of anthropology were intimately connected. To pursue one perspective to the exclusion of the other subdisciplines was deemed artificially limiting. Into this milieu came Lewis and Sally Binford during the summers of 1962 and 1963, working on the Carlyle Reservoir project in southern Illinois, which included excavations at Hatchery West, Toothsome, and Galley Pond. At about the same time, they began publishing archaeological theory and methodology that revolutionized the discipline. Only Lew and Sally can say how their time in Carbondale shaped their perspectives but, for me, I'd like to think that the Carbondale experience positively influenced their interdisciplinary work. I well remember discussions with Kelley regarding the new archaeology that he learned under Clyde Kluckhohn at Harvard before and during WWII, in comparison to the other “new” archaeology championed by the Binfords. Riley, Pennington, and Hedrick provided students with opportunities to integrate the archaeological perspective with the ethnographic and historical in material culture studies. The graduate students, including Weigand, Joe Mountjoy, and others, kept the discussion alive.
